US Marines Eyeing Polaris MRZR ATVs, Deployed by Indian Army for Operational Flexibility

Polaris develops heavier payload variant for Marines, tested for logistics and precision fires

New York: The US Marines and the Indian Army are both leveraging Polaris MRZR ATVs to enhance their operational capabilities. Polaris has developed an MRZR Alpha variant capable of powering offboard systems, nearing production, and a heavy-payload variant undergoing tests with the Marine Corps and U.S. Special Operations Command. The ability of these light vehicles to generate electricity for radars, networks, and weapons has been a primary focus for the Marines over the past year, reported Republic TV.

Polaris created a 1-kilowatt exportable power system that can be added to existing vehicles and a 5-kilowatt system for new vehicles. Both systems utilize a DC-to-DC power converter linked to the MRZR's alternator, exporting 24-volt power as needed. This innovation allows Marines to utilize technology without hauling separate generators, making it possible to power systems like the Networking On-the-Move satellite communications and the Common Aviation Command and Control System.

Enhancing Tactical Capabilities With AI And Advanced Mobility

The power-export technology is designed not to consume cargo space, with the necessary components neatly integrated into the vehicle. Polaris showcased the system at the Modern-Day Marine conference, where it demonstrated that unit maintainers can easily install the 1-kilowatt version. The 5-kilowatt variant prototypes are currently being tested at the Nevada Automotive Test Centre, with production expected to start later this year.

Polaris is also exploring a heavier payload MRZR variant, capable of carrying 3,600 pounds compared to the original 600 pounds. This extended truck maintains over 90% of parts commonality with the standard MRZR Alphas and can be transported internally by a V-22 Osprey aircraft. The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory has tested these prototypes for logistics and precision fires, evaluating their potential to fill gaps in the vehicle inventory between the MRZR and the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army showcased its Polaris ATVs during the 75th Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path. These ATVs, used by the Quick Reaction Teams, are integral to the Quick Reaction Force Vehicles, including light, medium, and heavy specialist vehicles. Major Toofan Singh Chauhan, leading the ATV segment, highlighted the vehicle's versatility in various terrains, from mountains to deserts and snow-covered regions.

Indian Army's Versatile Polaris ATVs For Rapid Deployment

The Indian Army's Polaris ATVs are designed for rapid troop transportation and operational flexibility. With a seating capacity of six and the ability to mount a Light Machine Gun at the rear, these ATVs are crucial for quick deployment. The vehicles' lightweight design allows for easy airlifting, ensuring swift troop movement in diverse operational environments.

The Polaris ATV's superior suspension system enables it to navigate steep inclines and declines efficiently, enhancing its usability in challenging terrains. These features make the ATV a valuable asset for the Indian Army's Quick Reaction Forces, facilitating quick response and mobility in critical situations.

The absence of exterior armour is a trade-off for speed and agility, emphasizing rapid troop transport over protection.

The collaboration between Polaris and the US Marine Corps focuses on integrating advanced technologies into the MRZR vehicles. This includes developing exportable power systems to support various operational needs without additional generators. The ongoing tests and future production of these systems aim to enhance the Marines' tactical capabilities significantly.

TikTok Or EVs, Entry of Trojans Into India Must Stop

In a decision taken by elements of the bureaucracy working with a silo mentality, electric vehicles from the PRC are to be given easier entry into India

by M D Nalapat

Functioning in silos has long been a feature of administration in India, and the consequence has often been that much too narrow a view gets taken when individual decisions get made even on major matters. At present, a situation exists where a state of hybrid war exists between India and a neighbour to the north that is intent on stunting our country’s economic progress and destabilizing its society. For quite some time, this columnist has been pointing to the danger caused by the deliberate spread of disinformation intended to sway attitudes in segments of society that overall would hurt the interests of the population. Just as there is a “WhatsApp University”, there is also a “TikTok University”, and even more potentially harmful, a “TikTok High School” for the very young in several countries, whose outpourings have become the accepted wisdom of hundreds of millions of youth in the major democracies.

Only in India did PM Modi recognize the danger and ban TikTok. Soon after Hamas carried out an unexpected terror attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 using methods unexpected by security agencies in the world’s only Jewish State, both TikTok School and TikTok University were soon flooded with messaging that emphasised not the brutality of the 7 October attack but the response of the Israeli Defence Forces to it.

There has been almost no mention in TikTok world about the way in which Hamas created and administered a reign of repression in Gaza, and the way in which residents of Gaza who deviated in their thinking and actions from the extremist line fundamental to the ideology of Hamas have been brutally dealt with. Fifteen years of savage repression of the people of Gaza went unmentioned, but in fifteen days of the IDF response to the 7 October attack, almost immediately there appeared a flood of reports in the US version of TikTok that demonised Israel and characterised IDF responses to the 7 October attack as being of the same genre as Hitlerite atrocities that were committed during World War II.

Each such message competed with others in portraying the IDF as a band of thugs intent on making innocent civilians suffer collective punishment for the Hamas terror attack on Israel. Small wonder that campuses across the US erupted in student fury. Thus far, President Joe Biden has not shut down TikTok in his country and the consequences of such indecision are playing out on campuses before him, harming his chances for a second term.

The 7 October terror attack was unexpected, despite several signs signalling the intent of Hamas to inflict such a blow in order to strengthen its credentials within the West Bank as the only “resistance” movement against Israel. As a consequence, the carefully scripted communications strategy that needs to accompany the use of overwhelming kinetic force by Israel was absent from the battlefield. Shortly after 7 October, TikTok High School and TikTok University were ready with their alternate perspective, which had the effect of casting cadres of Hamas, a votary of extremist hate, including denying the right of the Jewish people to exist, as innocent victims.

Through TikTok mostly, Hamas succeeded in hiding behind the Palestinian people, most of whom are moderate. Across the world, one-sided perceptions about Israel have been amplified, including in the PRC version of TikTok, Douyin, which is wholly different in intent and content from its counterparts in democracies. Efforts are ongoing by legislators to deprive Byte Dance, a company entirely under the control of the CCP, of control over TikTok in the US. The PRC-based company is using the courts to argue that “freedom of speech” is getting impaired by such moves.

When such freedom gets used to systematically foment hatred and violence within a democratic society and polity, it does not nourish democracy but weakens it. The harm done by toxic manufactured messaging by hostile states within democracies, including through covert elements of hostile powers embedded in domestic platforms, is palpable.

In a decision taken by elements of the bureaucracy working with a silo mentality, electric vehicles from the PRC are to be given easier entry into India. Given the commitment to protecting national security of PM Modi, the Prime Minister’s Office needs to step in on the basis of the adverse security and environmental implications of such a decision. The ease of embedding electric vehicles with trojans in the form of malware that are designed to garner information, including conversations, is the reason why several countries are reviewing their earlier lax policies regarding entry of electric vehicles from the PRC.

India needs to do the same, including because Indian domestic EV brands are on the edge of becoming world beaters in the field. Experts say that the life cycle of charging of batteries in PRC EVs is much lower than that of models developed by Indian or US manufacturers, thereby ensuring that PRC EVs, although initially cheaper to buy, will have a much higher cost over their lifecycle than competing brands. As for used EV batteries, more will need to be disposed of, and sooner, where PRC EVs are concerned. This would increase the risk of environmental damage, especially the absence of adequate supervision and safe storage of used batteries in parts of India. Trojans that are sent in by hostile states need to be met by a comprehensive ban on any such entry.

‘China’s Is The Hand Behind Hamas Attack On Israel’

HAMAS terror group leader Mohammed Deif (L), Hamas terrorists in Gaza

by Joyeeta Basu

NEW DELHI: The evidence of PRC green-signalling Hamas’ attack on Israel goes beyond the circumstantial.

Massive quantities of Chinese arms, ammunition, military grade communication and other intelligence gathering equipment were found in Hamas warehouses in Gaza during the raids conducted by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), in the aftermath of the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel by the Palestinian terrorist group. At least two tunnel engineers from China’s People’s Liberation Army were captured by the IDF, suggesting that extensive Chinese help was given to Hamas to construct the huge network of tunnels under Gaza city. Apart from this, PLA has been giving military training to the Hamas. In fact, the head of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, who masterminded the attack on Israel, lived in the PRC for years, and maintains deep contacts with the PLA and CCP. Allegedly, he even has two Chinese Muslim wives. This was disclosed by Guermantes “G-Man” Lailari, a retired US Air Force Foreign Area officer specializing in counterterrorism, irregular warfare and missile defence. Lailari says that it is time nations held PRC to account for the support it offers to various terrorist groups, including Hamas.

People’s Republic of China’s connection with the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel by the Hamas has been a matter of speculation. Lailari alleges that in spite of Chinese denials of any involvement with Hamas’ attacks, there is enough evidence to take China to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its support to terrorism. He says that it is not Iran, but PRC that is the hidden hand that green-signalled Hamas’ attack on Israel, the evidence of which goes beyond the circumstantial.

Direct Chinese Connection

Lailari, who is currently based in Taiwan, where he is a visiting research fellow at the Institute for National Defence and Security Research (Division of Chinese Politics, Military and Warfighting Concepts), was in India last week and spoke in depth on China’s involvement in malign activities, specifically its connection with the Hamas. According to him, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) found in Gaza “in massive numbers” “Chinese weapons, intelligence gathering equipment, and other military supplies”. Hamas warehouses had the Chinese QBZ assault rifles and QLZ87 automatic grenade launchers, “telescopic sights for rifles and cartridges for M16s, high-end communications equipment, listening devices, tactical military radios, and sophisticated explosives”. The IDF also found Chinese rocket technology in a Hamas laboratory. Lailari says that it’s likely that the PRC took the Iran route to supply Hamas with the weapons, thus insulating itself from any charges of direct involvement.

Additionally, that both Chinese tunnel engineers found in one of Gaza’s tunnels belonged to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) gives reasons to suspect the PRC and the technical expertise that the PRC—the PLA in particular—provided in building the tunnels, says Lailari.

Lailari says that Mohammed Deif, who heads the Hamas’ military wing, was sent to the PRC in the 1990s, by the then PLO. Deif finished his studies in artillery and rocketry in the PLA General Armament Department’s Ordnance Engineering College in Hebei Province’s Shijiazhuang in 2000, and later joined the Hamas. While in China, it is believed that he married two Chinese Muslim women, “of Sarta or Dongxiang ethnicity”. Lailari’s sources have told him that it is through one of Deif’s Chinese wives that a direct channel of communication between Hamas and the Chinese leadership was opened.

CCP Geopolitical Games

Hamas was preparing for attacking Israel since at least 2020. Lailari says that Hamas carried out four military exercises with 10 other terrorist groups, to prepare for the 7 October 2023 attacks. Three of these exercises were conducted on 29 December 2020, 26 December 2021 and 28 December 2022. However, the fourth exercise was brought forward to 12 September 2023. Lailari wonders what made the Hamas bring forward the exercise. Was the attack planned for October 2023 to derail the probable normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia as part of the Abraham Accords? The announcement was all set to take place when the attack happened. Lailari says that the US-initiated truce would have brought the Saudis, who were perceived to be drifting towards the PRC, back in the US sphere of influence; it would have also brought two of the strongest powers of the region, Israel and Saudi Arabia—both US allies—on the same page, thus limiting PRC’s influence in West Asia. The announcement of the India-initiated India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC), at the G20 New Delhi Summit on 9-10 September, too was not to PRC’s liking, as the IMEC is seen as an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Lailari says, “China was desperate and wanted something to happen”. Post the 7 October 2023 attack and Israel’s response, both the Israel-Saudi accord and the IMEC have been postponed.

Hamas-PRC Meetings Continue

Lailari says that the PRC has always been soft towards Hamas and was in touch with the Hamas in the run-up to the 7 October attack. But it never allowed its antipathy towards Israel to be shown in public. In fact, prior to7 October, it heavily monitored and censored any trace of anti-Semitism on Chinese social media. But after 7 October 2023, it was as if the PRC had opened the floodgates of “Han supremacism and anti-Semitism”. Lailari also points out that the PRC “never mentions Hamas atrocities”. China never criticises the Hamas in public and post the attack, it continues to be in regular touch with the Hamas.

On 17 March 2024, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met PRC Ambassador to Qatar, Cao Xiaolin and Foreign Ministry envoy Wang Kejian in Qatar. After the meeting, Ambassador Cao stressed on “the close and historic relationship between the Palestinian and Chinese peoples and China’s firm positions towards the Palestinian issue and its standing by the just demands of the Palestinian people for freedom, independence, and statehood.”

Wang stated that Hamas was a “part of the Palestinian national fabric and China is keen on relations with it.”

On 1 March 2024, Palestinian factions met in Russia from 29 February through 1-2 March 2024: “The Russian side provided a venue for the meeting between delegates from factions within the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), including the Fatah movement, as well as participants from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group. In all, envoys from more than 10 organizations have arrived in Moscow for the meeting.”

On 30 April 2024, the PRC Foreign Ministry announced that Hamas and Fatah diplomats held “in-depth and candid dialogue” to promote reconciliation. Hamas and Fatah agreed to continue the dialogue in June.

Three Wars Strategy

Lailari connects the Israel-Hamas war with the broader PRC strategy of bogging down the United States and its allies in “three major wars”, as expounded by a PLA strategic thinker, Long Kaifeng in four articles. The first of the articles was written in 2018 and the other three in April-June 2023. “According to Kaifeng’s April 2023 article: ‘On a global scale, three major battles are in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia respectively. The Ukrainian war represents the European front; the Middle Eastern battle will be a conflict between Israel and Palestine, and the Asian theatre might be the second Korean war’,” says Lailari. Two of these wars have already started—in Ukraine and in Israel-Gaza. The third war is yet to start.

Expose Chinese Link

Lailari says the time has come to expose Beijing’s support for Hamas. He says that all evidence in the US regarding PRC’s involvement in terrorism should be declassified and publicized. He also says that the countries whose citizens were either murdered—35 countries—or taken hostage—more than 40—by the Hamas should be encouraged to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague with such evidence to hold the PRC to account.

Capacity Building Important Component In India's Defence, Security Engagement With Maldives: MEA

On a question about Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, he said, "Our position on the region of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir is very clear

New Delhi: Capacity building is an "important component" in India’s defence and security engagement with the Maldives, and "we will be happy to take it forward" if New Delhi receives a request from Male for training their pilots, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson, made the comment during his weekly briefing in response to a query over reports on issues related to the operation of an aviation platform in the Maldives.

Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives to operate two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft, used primarily for medical evacuations. The last batch of Indian military personnel was repatriated by May 10, following an agreement between the two countries in February. The MEA spokesperson said, "Yes, capacity building is an important component in our defence and security engagement with the Maldives. We have in the past trained their personnel on the defence side, and if we receive a request for training of pilots, we will be happy to take it forward."

The Maldives is one of India’s key maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean Region, and the overall bilateral ties, including in areas of defence and security, witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous government in Male.

On a query about a fourth Indian national being arrested recently by Canadian authorities in connection with the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the MEA spokesperson said, "Yes, we have seen reports of the fourth person being arrested. We have so far formally not been conveyed of it and so far we haven’t received any consular access request." A fourth Indian national was arrested by Canadian authorities in connection with the killing of Nijjar, a week after police arrested three Indians linked with the high-profile case that has strained India’s relations with Canada. Nijjar (45) was killed outside Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, last June.

On another query about Indian students facing some issues in Canada, Jaiswal said, "We have a large number of students who have gone to Canada to study … The figure is significant. About what you are referring to is that certain students are facing problems that we haven’t come across as of now … deportation … I don’t have an update on that. We are not aware of that. There may be one case here or one case there, but that’s about it. We don’t see any major problem as far as the students in Canada."

The MEA spokesperson was also asked about reports claiming that a ship carrying arms, which left India and headed to Israel, was "denied" a port of call in Spain. "Today, in the morning, we saw some reports which talked about a ship, a Danish-flagged ship which was taking some supplies to … they had requested for a port call. We have seen the reports, we are looking into the matter, we will come back to you with more details as and when we have," the MEA spokesperson said.

On a question about Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, he said, "Our position on the region of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir is very clear. This region, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, is an integral part of India and it always has been and will always be so." The CPEC, which connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province, is opposed by India as it is being laid through PoK.

Asked if there will be any Indian delegation to Taipei and what India’s expectations will be from the new government in Taiwan, he said that with Taiwan, "we have ongoing exchanges, in cultural field, in economic field, trade field, investment field, scientific field, and we will continue with these exchanges."

On the recent visit of Special Envoy of the Russian President on Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, to India, Jaiswal said he met an Indian delegation led by Joint Secretary JP Singh, who looks after Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran in the Ministry of External Affairs. "They had bilateral consultations on Afghanistan. They discussed the situation on the ground. They also emphasised the need to continue providing development assistance and humanitarian support to the people of Afghanistan. So this was the context. They had a bilateral conversation," Jaiswal added.

Another Girls' School In South Waziristan Bombed

Peshawar: In another tragic blow to girls' education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amidst the ongoing wave of terrorism, terrorists have targeted a girls' school in the Wana tehsil of South Waziristan, as reported by Geo News.

The north-western region of the country has been plagued by terror attacks since mid-2021, with several girls' schools in KP districts being targeted.

The Sofia Noor School, established with support from the Wana Welfare Association to educate girls in the remote and underdeveloped district, fell victim to the bombing just weeks after its inception.

This attack follows closely on the heels of the destruction of another school in the southern districts merely eight days prior, according to Geo News.

On May 9, the Islamia Girls School in Sheva town, North Waziristan, was also bombed, fortunately resulting in no casualties.

The bombing of the school has instilled fear among the province's residents, who have been witnessing frequent attacks on educational institutions for years.

Reports indicate that construction was ongoing in some sections of the Sofia Noor School when the blast occurred around 3 am, causing damage to a portion of the building.

Although no casualties were reported, there have been claims on social media suggesting that the school's administration received extortion letters. However, locals have vehemently denied these allegations.

In KP, hundreds of schools faced bombings, arson, or attacks with automatic weapons over a decade ago. While the situation improved after police and security forces launched operations, the recent attacks on schools in Waziristan have reignited concerns among the local population, Geo News reported.

Pakistan's ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Hasan Zaigham, shared an advisory for their students on X, "In view of mob violence around student hostels in Bishkek, the embassy strongly advises all Pakistani students in Bishkek to stay indoors until the situation returns to normal."

"We are liaising with the local law enforcement authorities to ensure safety of our student fraternity." he added.

A spokeswoman for the Pakistani foreign office, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, stated that the Pakistani embassy has been actively addressing numerous inquiries from students and their families, as per ARY News.

She also advised individuals to text or use WhatsApp if unable to connect due to "phone traffic."

"In case the numbers do not connect because of phone traffic, please text/WhatsApp," Baloch said on X.

The embassy further disclosed that they had received no confirmed reports of the death or rape of any Pakistani student there.

Quoting the Kyrgyz press, it said that the matter boiled over after a video of a fight between Kyrgyz students and medical students from Egypt was shared on May 13.

It said that some hostels of medical universities in Bishkek and private residences of international students, including Pakistanis, have been attacked. The hostels are inhabited by students from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Following this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken note of the violent situation unfolding in Bishkek and has expressed concern for Pakistani students affected by the clashes.

Gujarat Police Bust Terror Module Planning Hits On Prominent Political Leaders, 3 Arrested

In a major bust, the Gujarat Police claimed to have busted a module that was planning to kill prominent political leaders across the country.

Briefing media persons on the breakthrough, on Friday, Commissioner, Gujarat Police, Anupam Singh Gehlot said a maulvi (cleric), identified only by his first name Sohail, was arrested in connection with the matter and disgorged more leads on the terror module on being interrogated.

The commissioner added that the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the central elite anti-terror agency, was also involved in the ongoing probe into the module.

"In the first week of May, we arrested a maulvi by the name of Sohail from the Surat district. On being interrogated, he shared more leads on this terror module that he was associated with. We recovered two voter identity cards from the cleric," Commissioner Gehlot told on Friday.

He revealed further that the police also seized two birth certificates--one of Surat and the other of Nawapura in Maharashtra--from him.

Speaking on another accused person, Mohammad Ali alias Shehnaz, who was also arrested, the commissioner said, "She used a mobile phone SIM from Nepal. Using his mobile tower location, we tracked him down at Muzaffarpur. He earlier used to stay in Nepal. He used a single mobile handset but operated 17 numbers."

The police commissioner revealed that Shehnaz also had 42 email IDs against his name, adding that he used his multiple SIMs and email IDs to threaten his targets.

"He had Nepalese citizenship in addition to an Aadhar card," the commissioner added.

On the third accused, identified as Raza, the commissioner said, "He destroyed his mobile handset but we managed to retrieve some information with the help of FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory). We are in the process of gathering further details and data on him and the module. He used a Pakistani SIM card provided by his handler Dagar."

Further investigation is underway, the police said.

China Targets Economic Integration With Taiwan's Matsu Islands

Taipei: China has announced a raft of proposals that target Taiwan's Matsu Islands, also known as Lienchiang County, for economic integration and to establish greater political influence over the island nation, reported Taiwan News.

The Taiwanese authorities have identified these measures as a threat to national security. As an outlying territory so close to China, Beijing hopes that economic links can be used to coerce the local government and population of the county to willingly accept Chinese administration.

10-point plan aims at increasing shipping and investment between Fuzhou and the Matsu Islands, which are about 20 km apart.

Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), along with the local government, organized the 26th Cross-Straits Fair for Economy and Trade from May 16 to 19 in Fuzhou, the capital of China's Fujian Province, Taiwan News reported.

The proposals would allow Matsu residents discounted rides on transportation and hotels in Fuzhou, free tours of Fuzhou's major cultural attractions, housing benefits, and dedicated hotline consultation for children's education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

There are also plans for an industrial cooperation zone that will make it easier for Taiwanese citizens in Matsu to establish businesses in Fujian. Additionally, China has pledged USD 1.38 billion each year to promote business links and offer Matsu residents the same property rights as Chinese citizens, reported Taiwan News.

Fuzhou aims to attract young Matsu residents with educational exchange opportunities and entice travelers with incentives related to tours and accommodation, like Fuzhou-Matsu city passes announced in February.

The Chinese authorities are also planning to create a cross-strait distribution centre in Fuzhou with an annual budget of USD 5.5 million to facilitate increased trade, shipping, and economic exchanges with Lienchiang County.

The proposals aimed at Matsu island are part of China's plan to establish a Fujian Cross-Strait Integration and Development Demonstration Zone, announced last September.

China aims to use trade and finance strategies along with infrastructure projects to annex Taiwan's outlying territories of Kinmen and Matsu initially, to be followed by Penghu and then the main island of Taiwan, according to Taiwan News.

Recently, Taiwan's authorities have raised concerns about China's efforts to target Lienchiang County.

Reportedly, more than 3,000 individuals have applied for the Fuzhou-Matsu City passes, which provide RMB 300 for free to people who travel to Fuzhou.

Additionally, the local Lienchiang County government is helping residents apply for prepaid cards, which some believe could directly violate Taiwan's law governing cross-strait relations.

The Magistrate of Lienchiang County, Wang Chung-ming, has been vocal in promoting a 27.2-kilometre bridge directly linking Matsu to Fujian.

The magistrate also promotes the infrastructure project as a means to connect Matsu's Nangan Island to Langqi Island and Fujian's highway network.

Baloch Activist Condemns Gwadar Fencing Project, Cites Cpec As Cause of Encirclement

Quetta: Mahrang Baloch, a Balochistan-based activist, said on Saturday that the fence around Gwadar was not merely physical but had been metaphorically erected ever since the initiation of mega projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

She was speaking at a conference organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) at the Quetta Press Club to denounce the Gwadar Fencing Project, with activists decrying it as the construction of a "mega prison."

The event, attended by many activists, intellectuals, scholars, lawyers, and social and political activists, shed light on Balochistan's ongoing struggle against the encroachment of the Gwadar region.

While speaking at the conference, Mahrang Baloch claimed that Balochistan had effectively been declared a military zone, with the benefits of development disproportionately flowing to Punjab province while Balochistan faced devastation and neglect.

"There is a fence that we can physically see and feel around, but I believe that Gwadar has been fenced since the approval of mega projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, because of which Balochistan has quite literally been declared a military zone," she said.

"The fence of separation was always encircling Gwadar because of CPEC, because all the developmental projects went to the Punjab province in Pakistan, and we got floods, devastation, atrocities, and destruction. The people of Balochistan were not able to raise their voices for their rights even when they were struggling for their lives in the recent floods," she added.

Highlighting the destructive impact of CPEC on Gwadar, Baloch emphasized the pervasive fear among locals, contrasting it with the prosperity that major projects typically bring to communities in other countries. She lamented the continuous state terrorism faced by Balochistan's residents, citing a recent spate of abductions in urban areas of Gwadar.

"The so-called help that was given during that time was useless for us, as the generators were given to us for pumping water, but we could not demand the oil that was needed to run them. It is quite brave of the people of Gwadar, who have taken an oath to never leave their mother land despite facing the state atrocities head-on. It is shameful that Pakistan has deployed two lakh defense personnel to control around one lakh people in Gwadar. And all these so-called protectors were sitting safely in their homes when our city was drowning in floods," she said.

Moreover, Baloch criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the development narrative in Gwadar, asserting that journalists attempting to report on the situation were either obstructed or granted limited access. She dismissed iconic photographs of development in the region as mere publicity stunts, arguing that they did not reflect the harsh realities faced by Balochistan's inhabitants.

"I have seen the fear in the locals over the CPEC projects, generally, in other countries, major projects like these bring growth and prosperity for the locals. But here, the people of Balochistan live in continuous fear, because of the negative impacts of the CPEC projects. Any individual belonging to any part of society is not leading a normal life anymore. We have been facing state terrorism because of the administration, because within a week, around 25 Baloch individuals have been abducted from urban areas of Gwadar," she said.

"The famous and iconic photographs that we have seen are just for publicity. Because not just the general public, but if journalists also desire to visit and report about the Gwadar area, they are shunned or very carefully or watchfully given permission to watch the so-called development in Gwadar," she added.

The conference concluded with a call to the Pakistani administration to halt the Gwadar Fencing Project and address the grievances of Balochistan's people, emphasising the need for inclusive development and respect for human rights.

The BYC's condemnation of the Gwadar Fencing Project underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding CPEC and its implications for the marginalized communities of Balochistan, raising pertinent questions about development, security, and autonomy in the region.

Israeli Forces Recover Another Hostage's Body From Gaza, A Day After Retrieving Three

Tel Aviv: A day after the bodies of three Israelis held hostage by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces retrieved the body of another hostage from the war-torn region on Saturday, The Times of Israel reported, citing Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

In a press conference, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said that the military recovered the body of another hostage from the Gaza Strip after announcing yesterday that three slain captives were returned on a special mission.

The hostage whose body was recovered on Saturday was identified as 53-year-old Ron Benjamin, who was abducted by Hamas on the morning of October 7.

Hagari said Benjamin was killed by Hamas terrorists on October 7 near Mefalsim, and his body was taken hostage to Gaza.

IDF announced it had recovered his remains in an overnight operation.

"His body was recovered alongside those of Itzhak Gelerenter, Amit Buskila, and Shani Louk in the Thursday night operation," Hagari said.

The Times of Israel reported that Benjamin was last heard from at 7:30 am on October 7, when he left a voice message for one of his two daughters, then travelling abroad, telling her he was heading home to Rehovot from a planned group bike ride near the Gaza border, given the cascade of rockets.

That morning, Benjamin had set out at 6:30 am to meet up with friends for a bike ride near Kibbutz Beeri. When he heard the sirens, he decided to turn around and head home. He spoke with his wife, Ayelet, and left a message for his daughter.

On Friday, IDF recovered bodies of three hostages from the war-torn Gaza Strip amid intense fighting raging between Israeli forces and Hamas, The Times of Israel reported. The three were identified as Itzhak Gelerenter, Amit Buskila, and Shani Louk.

In a press statement, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said the bodies were recovered in an overnight operation carried out by the military and Shin Bet.

The three were at the Supernova music festival near Re'im on the morning of the Hamas-led October 7 onslaught, where they then fled to the Mefalsim area.

Hagari said they were killed there by Hamas terrorists, and their bodies were then kidnapped to Gaza.

Until recently, both Gelerenter and Buskila were presumed to be alive, while Louk was confirmed dead in late October after a piece of her skull was identified following widely shared footage of terrorists kidnapping her, The Times of Israel reported.
